Hi Polite One:
I work for a gigantic company
many hate. When people hear the name, the response is always negative and on
occasion, violent. I joined a country club recently and at a new member event I
was asked the dreaded question “what do you do?” I said, “well, you know this
and that”.
The new members thought
I was a gangster and made a hasty retreat. What is the politest way not to
answer this question? I’ve tried to say I work in an office
but with follow-up questions, they figure it out, and then it gets
unpleasant. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Gregg
Hello Gregg,
How awkward for
you! There is no right or wrong way to answer this question, but truth
can be avoided...for some time anyway.
Your answer was
good. I'm sorry it caused a bit of anxiety for some.
How About
"As little as
possible."
"Whatever my wife
tells me to do."
"Work is so
dreary, let's focus on what we do in our private time."
"I believe our jobs
don’t define any of us. It is how we apply our off-work hours."
Follow up with asking
what the other person does in his/her off-work hours.
Or a Version
of the Truth
"I have a great
job, but I'd rather have all of you know me for me, not my job or the company
that employs me.” (smile)
I'm sorry this is a
problem for you.
Most sincerely,
The Polite One
