4 Most Asked Prom Etiquette Questions Answered

Prom Etiquette Book by Rebecca Black

When should I ask my date for the prom?

Ask your date two months before the prom.  This is plenty of time to shop and prepare.

How do I decide what type of flowers do I give my date?

Gentlemen ask their date what color her dress is and orders what the lady wants, either a wristlet, nosegay (a small bunch to carry), or corsage in her color.

Ladies purchase a boutonniere or small flower for her date’s lapel (rose or carnation). It is usually the same color as her flowers.

Who pays?

Typically, the young man would pay if he can afford it. However, some couples split the cost; this is becoming more common.

May I go to the prom by myself, or may I go with a group of friends?

Sure, you may go with a group of friends because you can share the cost of travel.  Nevertheless, it might not be best to go alone because you will want to dance.

What is California Cocktail Attire?

Dear Polite One , What is California cocktail attire? Thank you, Confused Dear Confused , There is no such thing.   At times, it feels as if hosts just like to make these things up to confuse their guests.   I’m sure that’s not the case.   Still...      Many hosts try to create a “feeling,” or more appropriately, “set the stage” for an event.   So, they will incorporate a well-known attire category with a word that describes that elusive stage.   This leads to the confusion we both feel since neither of us can actually see inside their minds.   So, I suggest going with slightly laid-back cocktail attire, which typically is the suit for men and the little black dress or its equivalent for women.    Perhaps skip the tie and accessories that appear expensive.   Additionally, it is appropriate to call the host and ask for clarification.   Sincerely, The Polite One More by The Polite One How to Decode ...
