Are Thank-You Notes Expected for Guests Who Gave Housewarming Gifts?

Dear Polite One,

We just recently completed a home remodel and had an open house party with cocktails and horse d'oeuvres. Many of the roughly 100 guests brought housewarming gifts, although we didn’t expect them.  Are thank-you notes appropriate?
